\n may be prompted to enter the CD key, and then you receive one of the
\nfollowing error messages:<\/span><\/p>\n

\nCAUSE<\/span>
\nSetup does not succeed at the Windows NT
\nVirtual DOS Machine (NTVDM) level as installation is handed off to
\nAcmsetup. This is caused by a corrupt 16-bit subsystem.<\/span>
\nRESOLUTION<\/span>
\nOn Windows 2000 platforms, boot into Safe
\n Mode by pressing F8 when prompted at the startup of the system and
\nselecting Safe Mode. Then attempt installation again.<\/span><\/p>\n

If the installation does not succeed
\nand returns one of the errors listed in the “Symptoms” section of this
\narticle, continue with the following steps:<\/span>
\nClear the Temp folder by removing any previous incomplete installations.<\/span>
\nThe default location for the Temp folder
\non Windows 2000 is C:Documents and SettingsProfileLocal SettingsTemp
\n C:WinntTemp or, if upgraded from Windows 98, C:WindowsTemp.<\/span>
\nThe default location for the Temp folder on Windows NT 4 is C:Temp C:WinntTemp.<\/span>
\nNOTE: To discover the location of your Temp folder: on the Start menu, click Run, type %temp%, and then click OK.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTry to manually start Acmsetup by typing the following command line:<\/span>
\nE:SETUPACMSETUP.EXE \/T *.STF \/S E: \/n “” \/o “” \/k “YYYYYYYYYY” \/b1<\/span><\/p>\n

where E is the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM
\ndrive letter, and YYYYYYYYYY is the CD key for the product (the \/k
\noptions and its argument should be omitted for Service Pack
\ninstallations).<\/span><\/p>\n

NOTE:The specific *.stf file that is
\nrequired for the manual command line will vary depending on the specific
\n product you are installing. Search the Setup folder on the CD-ROM of
\nthe product you are installing for the *.stf to use. For example, for
\nVisual Basic 6.0 Professional, use VB98Pro.stf.<\/span>
\nIf you still cannot install the product
\nby passing the command line manually, continue with the following to
\nrepair the NTVDM process.<\/span><\/p>\n

Nullify any nonstandard settings in
\nthe Config.nt and Autoexec.nt files in the system rootSystem32 folder.
\nTo do so, use an REM statement to remark out each entry except the
\nfollowing default entries:<\/span>

\nto expand Autoexec.nt_ and Config.nt_ from the Windows NT or Windows
\n2000 CD-ROM to the SystemRootSystem32 folder:<\/span>
\nTo expand a single compressed file, use
\nthe Expand.exe program. This program is located on the Windows CD-ROM in
\n the I386 folder.<\/span>
\nTo expand the required files:<\/span>
\nInsert the Windows CD-ROM into the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive.<\/span>
\nAt the command prompt, type the following, and then press ENTER:<\/span>

\nexample, for Visual Basic 6.0 Professional, it is VB98Pro.stf<\/span>
\nGenerating a Log File<\/span>
\nYou can tell the Acme part of Setup to generate a log file. To do this, start Setup with the following command:<\/span>

where X is the location of the CD-ROM
\n or DVD-ROM drive, and pathfile name is the path and file name for the
\nlog file. The path and file name must be in 8.3 short name format and
